If you’re new to kitten-hood, it may seem like there’s a lot to learn. Learning how to get your kittens to use the litter box can seem overwhelming to new kitten parents. The good news is that it’s usually a very simple and painless training procedure.
Why It’s Easy For Kittens To Use The Litter Box
Cats have a natural instinct to do their business in soil or sand, so kittens are quick learners. Watching their mother eliminate in certain locations will quickly teach them to do the same. This is just one of many reasons why cats are better than dogs. 😉
Make sure that your kittens know the location of the litter box in your house and that the box is easy to access. After they scarf down their, hopefully healthy, meals – simply pick them up and take them to the box. Their digestive systems are very small so they’ll need to ‘go‘ shortly after eating. By placing them in the appropriate place after meals, they will develop this good habit quickly.
For kittens to use the litter box, it must be size appropriate as well. If your kitties are small, make sure the box is short enough for them to easily jump into. Placement of the box should also be in an easy-to-access and quiet place.
If your kitten hasn’t been taught by her mother to use the litter box, give her a little help. Once mealtime is over, take her to the box and show her how to scratch the litter by gently maneuvering her front paws. Give her a little time – she’ll get it eventually. Once she’s figured it out, make sure to give her some privacy when using the box… but reward her when she’s done.
