Getting an old cat up and moving can sometimes be a challenge. Just like us humans, cats’ bodies start to break down over time – and they tend to move around less. However – the phrase ‘a body at rest tends to stays at rest, while a body in motion tends to stay in motion‘ is particularly poignant here.
Here’s the issue: If our cats don’t move enough, their little bodies will break down faster. Free radicals begin to build up in their system – and start breaking down their muscle, organs and joints… leading to a stiff kitty. We don’t want a stiff kitty.
As cat ladies, we tend to like a simple routine. Laying around is something we love to do – especially if we’re feeling tired or worn out – so we think our cats do too. But cats are made to spend their lives to running, jumping, hunting and using their instincts. So, here are some ideas on how to get your old cat moving again.
How To Get An Old Cat Moving Around More
- Start feeding your older cat several smaller meals and move them around the house. We do this with our old man when he starts to get lazy. I let him smell his lunch so he gets up and starts moving toward the food. Then I call him and walk slowly to the stairs and make him come downstairs (or upstairs) to get his food. This gets him up and moving more times throughout the day.
- Hide the food around the house. If you’re not home during the day, you can hide lunch in small bites around the house. When your old cat gets hungry he will use his instincts to go hunt for his food. This is great for exercise and stress.
- Take your older kitty outside. Even cats that seem lazy LOVE the outdoors. If you can build a catio or outside unit to keep them safe, great. If you don’t have this option, try supervised sessions outdoors or on a leash.
- Provide vertical space and toys. Not all older cats are into the cat trees or toys, but if they’ve been moving around (using the above suggestions) they’ll be more likely to enjoy climbing and engaging with you for some playtime. Take advantage of this. The more exercise the better!
