Pumpkin is a super easy item to access that can really help a kitty with and an upset tummy. We recommend keeping a can of 100% pure pumpkin in your pantry at all times – it’s such an affordable and effective home remedy for cats dealing with constipation, diarrhea or other GI issues.

Pumpkin for Cats with Diarrhea

Pumpkin is rich in fiber, so it helps our cats bodies in many ways. Because it is rich in soluble fiber, pumpkin can absorb excess water in the digestive tract, relieving diarrhea and loose stools. It also contains potassium, iron and vitamins A,C & E, which is helpful in firming stools. We suggest adding one teaspoon of 100% pure pumpkin to your kitty’s meal twice daily.

Pumpkin for Cats with Constipation

Many cat parents worry about using pumpkin for constipated kitties because it helps with the opposite issue – diarrhea. However, this plant based fiber also can act as roughage in the digestive tract and get things moving too. It’s basically one of those awesome ingredients that can either help sooth or move the bowels of our cats!

Pumpkin is also helpful for hairballs in the same way that it’s good for constipation. In addition, pumpkin is a great additive for weight control. It is low in calories but makes our kitties feel full, so it’s a helpful addition to the meals of overweight cats too.

Cats with IBD or IBS flareups can also benefit from pumpkin. Dr. Karen Becker recommends a bland diet of 100% pure pumpkin and cooked ground turkey (50/50) for kitties during this time.

If your cat’s digestive issues are severe, please take them to a veterinarian first. Pumpkin is a great home remedy for the occasional diarrhea or constipation, but more chronic issues should be evaluated by a professional.
