What a whirlwind of a time for us all! The country is shutting down and everyone is self-quarantined to be safe from a virus attacking the globe. For many of us cat parents, we enjoy the excuse to stay home with our cats during COVID-19 times, but we are still doing our best to stay clean.
Stores across the country are selling out of sanitizers and other cleaning products because we’ve been advised to stay super clean. We agree that cleanliness is important, however, we also want to be mindful of the cleaning products we use.
Unfortunately, many common household cleaners are toxic to our cats. The last thing we want is to accidentally poison our kitties while trying to keep sanitized – so we need to be careful. Chemical cleaners can create health issues for our kitties. Some of the side effects are immediate and others will surface over time – and we’d like to avoid them all!
Lysol, Pine Sol, chemical disinfectant wipes and floor cleaners… all of these types of cleaning solutions will be ingested by our cats. We clean our surfaces, our cats walk on them and then groom themselves. The sprays will be inhaled into their lungs and all of these chemicals can be absorbed into their blood streams. Not what we want for our little loves!
The good news? There are many ways to sanitize our homes that are safe for cats during this COVID-19 crisis. We mainly use vinegar and water for our cleaning solutions, but lately we’ve been using more rubbing alcohol and hydrogen peroxide. Add some alcohol to your vinegar cleaner or dilute some peroxide in water. Spray this on your counters or your hands for safe cleanliness.
