At some point, most of us with aging cats have been told by our vets that senior kitties need less protein in their diets. Unfortunately, this advice—though well-intentioned—is not only outdated, it’s also potentially harmful for our older cats.
And here’s why…
One of the most common conditions senior cats face is chronic kidney disease (CKD). It’s also one of the leading causes of death in older felines. Research shows that reducing dietary phosphorus levels for cats with CKD can help slow the progression of the disease. Because phosphorus is found in animal protein (meat), there seemed to be a logical conclusion: feed less meat, reduce phosphorus, help the kidneys.
But here’s the kicker: cats are obligate carnivores. All cats – young and old – require a meat-based diet to live. Meat isn’t optional – it’s vital. In fact, as cats age, they actually need more high-quality protein to help maintain muscle mass and prevent degenerative issues.
When we reduce the amount of protein in their diet – especially if we’re reducing animal protein – they can start to waste away. This is what we often see super skinny senior cats. But in many cases, it’s not age – it’s diet.
In our interview with Dr. Chris Bessent on this topic, she explained this ‘wasting’ as a cat cannibalizing his own muscle mass for needed nutrition. That’s how important more quality protein is for our senior cats.
So What Can We Do to Help Prevent or Manage Kidney Disease in Our Cats?
We’ve personally walked this path with two of our cats – one in early-stage CKD, and the other in stage 2 renal failure. And here’s what we did to not only stop the progression of their kidney disease, but also improve quality of life:
👉 We switched from processed food to a balanced fresh food diet.
We used eggshell calcium (as it’s lower in phosphorus than bone) and focused on high-quality animal protein. You can make this kind of diet at home or buy it from a trusted commercial raw pet food company. The key is quality, fresh, species-appropriate, and balanced food.
👉 We added the Kitty Kidney Kit to their daily meals.
This combination of natural support made a big difference in how they felt and functioned. (Link below if you want to check it out.)
👉 We supplemented with milk thistle.
This herb is a powerful detoxifier for the liver and kidneys. It helps flush toxins and support overall organ function – especially important for older cats.
These changes didn’t just help their kidneys. We noticed improved energy, healthier coats, better digestion, and stronger immune systems too. It was a game-changer for us – and more importantly, for our cats.
So next time you hear that senior cats need less protein, remember: it’s not about less – it’s about better. Give your older kitty the nourishment they truly need, and you might just see a whole new spark in their step.
