Yes, you read that right! The stars have aligned to make playtime into prey-time with the Awesome, Edible Cat Toy! Enrichment for cats just reached a whole new level!
Let’s start with the first fun fact about this awesome, edible cat toy. It comes from a source you might overlook – if you’re prone to judging a book by its cover. The recipe for this edible entertainment comes from the New York Time’s best-selling book, The Forever Dog Life. And this recipe is just one of dozens that help cook up a forever cat life! Worth noting these recipes don’t require a PhD in anything (I’m easily intimidated by complicated recipes) – these are simply simple and so much fun!
For this specific recipe, you’ll want to first make sure you have a ball mold. We use a 1 inch silicone ball mold for the perfect cat toy.
The Incredible, Edible Ball Recipe
Ingredients: Coconut or avocado oil, ½ cup diced add-ins of choice (fruits, vegetables, meats, fish, or more, if desired – you can also make plain broth or tea balls), 4 tablespoons gelatin powder, 1 cup broth or tea.
- Lightly grease both halves of a ball mold with coconut or avocado oil.
- Place ¼ cup of the add-ins in each half of the mold.
- In separate bowl, sprinkle gelatin powder over broth or tea and stir to dissolve. Let sit until it starts to thicken. This is also the place in the recipe to have fun with your choice of add-ins! We used sardines (in water) and catnip – but get creative!
- Pour liquid-gelatin mixture into each ball mold half, filling to rim.
- Let sit until the mixture becomes the consistency of thick jelly, and won’t run out of molds, then press one ball half on top of the other. Wipe away the excess.
- Refrigerate 3 hours or until firm.
- Gently remove ball from mold.
