Routine IS Important For Cats!!
To many people, cats are ‘convenience pets’ because they are well-known for being low maintenance to their human companions. Because of this, we tend to ignore some of their basic needs. Routine for cats is one of those small things that make a big difference in the overall health and happiness of our cats.
Cats don’t like guessing games. They want to know when they’ll be fed, when their litter will be clean and fresh and when it’s time to sleep or play. Routine is important for cats because it keeps their stress levels low.
Just like humans, stress is one of the leading causes of disease in cats. Anxiety breeds inflammation and lowers the immune system of our feline friends. A simple, steady schedule can and will help reduce these stress levels greatly.
Plan a few set times per day that you’re available to feed your kitties, change the litter and engage in playtime with them. Start today and stick with it. Putting yourself on this schedule may just help lower your anxiety too!
Routine can be difficult for some of us who work wonky schedules. If you are never home at the same time during the week, consider a timed feeding bowl that keeps the food fresh and opens at feeding time at least twice daily. This will take the stress off of you and your cat. Just don’t forget to set the timer before leaving for work. 🙂
Litter box routine is important for cats too. Cats don’t like dirty litter boxes and this can increase their stress as well. Be sure to scoop your kitty’s litter at least once per day and clean the box completely on your day off. If you can do this each day before or after work, they’ll really appreciate it.
So, be sure to set a routine for your kitties and stick to it as much as possible. And if your cat is still high stressed after implementing a regular routine, consider a natural calming formula like Cat Calm.
