Polydactyl cats are felines that have more than the normal amount of toes on their paws. Cats usually have a total of 18 toes – 5 on each front paw and 4 on each rear paw. There’s not many things cuter than toe beans on a kitty’s paw to us cat lovers, and these cats give us more to love!
The extra toes on cats is due to a genetic mutation of a dominant gene, but usually doesn’t hinder a kitty’s normal abilities. While polydactyl cats are more common in certain geographic regions, it can be found in any breed, gender or size of cat.
The Cat Of Many Toes
It’s most common for polydactyl cats to have extra toes on their front paws, but can also affect their hind paws. Rarely will cats have extra toes on every paw.
The number of toe beans doesn’t usually affect a cat’s health, so we don’t refer to them as “special needs cats.” Trimming nails, however, can be a bit more challenging. While important for all cats, I think it’s even more important to keep the nails of a polydactyl kitty trimmed. If you’ve ever clipped your cat’s nails, you know how difficult it can sometimes be. Add in extra toes and it can be even more challenging. If you want an awesome trick for trimming cats nails easily and peacefully, click here.
Polydactyl cats are also revered on social media. Cat lovers around the globe love a kitty with some extra toe beans. Many online accounts report that they believe their cats to have better balance as well! So, if you have a polydactyl, go ahead and start an Instagram or Twitter account for them. 🙂
Every cat deserves a good home and lots of love, so if you have room in your home consider bringing in a polydactyl kitty!
