Deworming cats is often treated as a routine, one-size-fits-all practice. Cat parents are told that they need to regularly deworm, even without any symptoms and no clear risk factors. Is that truly necessary?

We believe in intentional, informed care. That means understanding when deworming is truly needed and when it may put unnecessary stress on your cat’s body.

Does Every Cat Need to Be Dewormed?

No, not all cats need routine deworming.

Indoor-only cats with limited exposure to parasites have a much lower risk of intestinal worms. Automatically deworming cats without evidence of infection may do more harm than good, especially when chemical medications are involved. We believe in weighing the risk versus the benefit of anything we do for our cats.

Cats with a higher risk of intestinal worms include:

  • Outdoor or indoor-outdoor cats
  • Cats who hunt rodents or birds
  • Cats with current or past flea infestations
  • Kittens, particularly those from unknown backgrounds
  • Cats living in rescue or shelter environments

If a cat does not fall into these categories and is not showing symptoms, routine deworming may not be necessary.

Because symptoms can be vague or absent, testing is the most reliable first step. One of the best tools available to cat parents is fecal testing. Many veterinarians allow stool samples to be dropped off without bringing the cat into the clinic. This is great because it reduces stress and anxiety for your cat, avoids unnecessary car rides and vet visits and still confirms whether worms are present while identifying the type of parasite involved.

Testing before treating allows for targeted decisions instead of guessing.

Concerns With Chemical Dewormers

Traditional deworming medications are chemical poisons designed to kill parasites. While they can be effective, they must be processed through a cat’s liver and kidneys. This can be hard on cats, especially kittens, senior cats or those with underlying health issues.

Common side effects associated with chemical dewormers may include vomiting, diarrhea or loose stool, loss of appetite, lethargy, drooling, and pain at the injection site. While serious reactions are considered uncommon, rare but potentially serious side effects have been reported with some chemical dewormers. These may include neurological symptoms such as seizures, extreme lethargy, allergic reactions, respiratory distress, or signs of liver stress, particularly in kittens, senior cats, or cats with underlying health conditions. This is why we believe testing first to determine whether treatment is truly necessary is so important.

Natural Support for Intestinal Worms in Cats

For cat parents looking to reduce chemical exposure, there are natural options that may support the body’s ability to address intestinal parasites gently.

A few natural options that are commonly used are herbal deworming formulas, pumpkin seeds, coconut oil, and apple cider vinegar.

Some cat parents choose a professionally formulated herbal blend rather than trying to source and dose individual ingredients. Our  Worm-X  is a gentle liquid option that is designed to support the body’s natural ability to address intestinal parasites and is easy to administer, making it a less stressful option for many cats.

Choosing a Gentler Path

Natural deworming approaches are often easier to administer when mixed with food, less stressful for cats, more affordable, and more beneficial for long-term organ health.

Cat parents should be able to talk openly with their veterinarians. Ask about stool testing first. Ask whether gentler options may be appropriate. If your veterinarian does not offer natural alternatives, it is completely reasonable to pause and do additional research before moving forward.

Our cats depend on us to make thoughtful decisions for them. Reducing unnecessary chemical exposure whenever possible is one way we protect their long-term health and well-being.

By testing first, treating only when needed, and choosing gentler options whenever appropriate, we can support our cats with the care, respect, and intention they deserve.
