There are several reasons cats will urinate outside the box and stress is one of the most common. Upon writing this blog, there’s a lot of anxiety going on around our world – and our kitties feel it. Sometimes they express that stress by ‘marking’ (urinating) around the house. Unfortunately, we will often continue to smell that strong pee smell long after we clean it up. Today we’ll explain some easy ways to get rid of that cat urine smell in the home.
Before we start, I must emphasize the importance of finding the reason behind the urine marking first. Cats will often go outside the box to show you they’re in pain. Urinary infections can also be a result of feline stress, so be sure to get to the root of the issue and take proactive measures with your kitty’s urinary health. If you’ve already eliminated a health issue as the reason for not using the litter box, it’s time to examine behavioral causes.
Ways To Get Rid Of A Cat Urine Smell
- First step is to find the spot that’s been soiled. Sometimes you’ll smell the urine but can’t pinpoint where it is. If so, turn off the lights and take a black light to the stinky area. When the light hits the urine it will glow!
- If the urine is on a hard surface, first wipe it up and then use one part hydrogen peroxide and two parts water to clean it. You can also use undiluted white vinegar if you don’t have peroxide nearby. Both of these options will also assist in helping your cat not re-mark that area with their urine.
- If the urine is on carpet or fabric, it’s a little tricky. First remove as much urine as possible and then soak the area with water. Keep blotting the spot until the cloth or paper towel no longer has the yellow urine on it and the area is nearly dry. Then saturate the area with a natural, enzymatic cleaner and let it sit for the recommended amount of time. Blot the area up and allow it to dry!
It’s important to note that kitties will often re-mark areas they’ve marked before. That’s why it is so important to thoroughly remove their scent. Using the above instructions will help insure that your cat doesn’t go back to the ‘scene of the crime’!
