In this blog, Julie-Anne Heart, soul activator for cat guardians from Naturally Cats, empath, author and cat mum, shares with us how to use colour therapy to support the emotional, energetic and physical needs of our beloved cats.

How it all began.

Leo, Julie-Anne's cat, enjoys the red colour therapy due to his anxiety issues.

I’ve worked with cats for nearly 20 years, starting off with traditional behavior modification but eventually training in complementary modalities such as feline self-selection, animal healing, reiki, chakra and auric healing and much more.

Many years ago when I was completing my training in chakras and aura therapy I remember trying to find a way to learn which colour was associated with each chakra and found myself thinking about my cat Leo instead! Then it was like a little bolt of lightning struck me and I wondered if I could bring the two together, how could colour help my ex-feral, timid, black cat? I started to experiment.

Leo was very nervous, anxious, easy to spook and run away – from anything! So I put down a red pillowcase and noticed that he kept sitting on it. And so for me, cats and colour therapy began.

What is colour therapy?

Colour therapy is the complementary practice of offering your cat(s) the healing frequency of different colours to support their various needs. It is incredibly simple yet highly effective and doesn’t take much effort on your part! You just need to find different colours to offer to your cat, and they will do the rest.

Colour therapy of blue with IIiana the catWhen a cat is working with colour therapy they are using the unique frequency of a colour to help themselves to heal. For example the colour red has a frequency of 400 – 480Thz and is associated with the root chakra. The root chakra is connected with feeling safe, grounded and controls the fight/flight/freeze response. So generally anxious and nervous cats tend to be ungrounded and need root chakra support, like my boy Leo.

Why use it?

When you offer your cat colour therapy you are giving your cat autonomy over their healing and wellness. You are giving your cat a voice by giving them a choice. By domesticating cats we are asking another species to co-exist with us, the least we can do is offer them the chance to feel the best they can in this environment.

Colour therapy offers the cat to heal in ways that only they know what they need. For example you don’t know if I want to go for a walk or get snuggled on the sofa with a box set (aka TV series)! Cats are sentient, sensitive beings and if we give them the option to heal, they will take it gladly.

How to offer it?

Offering colour therapy couldn’t be easier. You simply need to go through your cupboards and see what colour you have. I generally use the 7 main chakra colours – Red, Orange, Yellow, Green, Blue, Indigo, Violet. You can put down pens, coloured paper, scarves, t-shirts, jumpers, heck coloured (clean!) pants if you have them!

Everything is made of energy and when something is coloured it has a unique frequency that the cat will sense and feel and work with to heal itself.

Get your coloured offerings and put them down on the floor or bed. More on this in the do’s and don’ts a little further on in the blog.

What are the benefits?

The unique frequency of each colour is associated with a different chakra. You can find out more about cat chakras here.

When the cat is working with a colour the energy of that colour will be helping them to either clear, cleanse, charge or balance their chakra.

So a cat that may have been vomiting or having digestion issues is likely to lie on, sit near, sleep on or next to yellow fabric (or whatever medium you are using) to support the solar plexus, the chakra associated with the stomach.

Colour therapy can help to support physical issues such as reducing pain and inflammation. It can also support the cats emotional health by reducing anxiety, stress, or overwhelm. And helps with mental health challenges such as anxiety and aggression.

Do’s and don’ts:

DON’T:

  • Put the colour near litter trays or feeding stations
  • Put it on existing, established cat beds
  • Have all the colours in one place

DO:

  • Put the colour in places that smell like you (it will provide emotional support to the cat whilst they are healing)
  • Put 2-3 colours in one place, a little distance apart
  • Have individual colours. Rainbow fabric is great, but the cat may not want to work with all chakras at the same time, it could be intense for them.

How will I know my cat is working with the colour?

Leo the cat on purple using colour therapySome Cats may take a while to lean into the healing of colour therapy. As predator and prey animals it can take some cats a while to feel vulnerable and safe enough to work with the colour so be patient. Others will jump straight onto it!

A cat may sit on, near or next to the colour. Again this comes back to the cat knowing what they need, which is also why we don’t force any colour on them by adding it to cat beds. Some cats may sit, sleep or play with the colour, trust that they are doing what they need to.

We have colour down all the time and my boys love it! I got fabric from a craft shop that is easily washable and durable.

I hope you enjoy offering your cat colour therapy. If you share any images online be sure to tag me as I LOVE to see cats on colour.
