Pet parenting is shifting these days, and a recent study conducted by Mars Inc. sheds light on some surprising trends. For the first time ever, more men than women are cat owners, with 52% of men reporting owning a cat compared to 48% of women. This finding is part of Mars’ Global Pet Parent Study, which surveyed over 20,000 dog and cat owners across 20 countries to reveal the ever-changing dynamics of pet parenting in this day and age.
Cats in the Spotlight
Cat ownership has risen globally, now surpassing dog ownership in many areas. While cats have long been appreciated for their independence, men are increasingly drawn to the stress relief and entertainment cats provide. These findings challenge the outdated stereotype of cat ownership being predominantly associated with women… mostly of whom are single and wear robes. 😉
The study revealed that generational differences are also shaping pet parenting trends. Gen Z (born 1997-2012) and Millennials (born 1981-1996) lead the charge, with 45% and 40% of respondents, respectively. These generations consider their pets the most important part of their lives. This devotion is reflected in their spending habits too, as these younger generations invest more in their pets than their older counterparts.
First-Time Pet Parents
An astonishing 47% of respondents are first-time pet owners, suggesting a new wave of individuals discovering the joys of pet parenting. Or… does the rumor hold true that individuals adopt cats as “practice pets”?
According to the research, the decision to adopt a pet is influenced by family (26%) and friends (21%), but social media also plays a notable role, especially for younger pet parents. Platforms showcasing adorable kittens and helpful pet tips have made a significant impact on influencing decisions.
However, the journey isn’t without challenges. Non-cat owners often cite concerns about furniture damage (15%) and allergies (11%) as barriers to bringing a feline friend home. Meanwhile, 32% of current pet parents feel guilty about leaving their pets alone, and 26% find traveling with pets to be difficult.
A Shift Toward Sustainability
Sustainability is also becoming a priority for modern pet parents. Nearly half (45%) of those surveyed expressed a preference for ethically produced pet products. Gen Z stands out in this regard, demonstrating a stronger commitment to eco-friendly choices for their pets. This focus on sustainability aligns with current global trends and highlights the evolving values of younger generations.
The Emotional Connection
This study highlights the deep emotional bond between pet parents and their animals. More than one-third of respondents (37%) consider their pets the most important aspect of their lives. This sentiment is even more among Gen Zers and Millennials, showcasing how pets have become integral members of the family.
As the global pet population approaches 1 billion, it’s evident that the role of pets in our lives is more significant than ever. And more importantly, the future of pet care looks bright. Especially now that we know men love cats too. 🙂 Whether it’s through sustainable, trusted and natural products or addressing common concerns, the pet care industry is evolving to meet the needs of our new generations of devoted pet parents.
