Traveling as a cat parent can be bittersweet. On the one hand, excitement of new journeys calls; on the other, leaving your cats behind is really hard. With five cats of our own, we know firsthand how challenging this can be. In 2024 we had several trips we needed to make for our business, which made us finally focus on polishing our traveling tips for cat parents. Leaving your cats might still be difficult, but these tips can make traveling easier for both you and your kitties.
1. Find a Reliable Sitter
Having someone trustworthy to care for your cats is the most crucial step. If a close friend or family member can stay at your home, that’s ideal. Cats thrive in their familiar environment, and a live-in sitter minimizes disruptions. If that’s not an option, hire a professional cat sitter to visit at least twice daily to feed them, scoop the litter, and play with them.
2. Write Out Clear Instructions
Provide your sitter with detailed instructions about your cat’s routine. Be sure to include:
- Mealtime schedules
- Specific feeding portions
- Litter box cleaning protocol
- Playtime and enrichment activities
- Emergency vet contact information
- Any necessary supplements or medications
Leave no detail overlooked. A well-informed sitter equals happy, healthy cats.
3. Stick to Their Routine
Cats are creatures of habit, and consistency is key to reducing stress. Ask your sitter to mimic your cats’ daily routine as closely as possible. From feeding times to play sessions, sticking to a schedule can help your cats feel more secure.
4. Provide Comfort with Familiar Scents
Leave a few unwashed shirts or blankets where your cats like to sleep. Your scent will provide a calming reminder of you and help ease any anxiety they may feel in your absence.
5. Turn on Calming Music or Cat TV
Before heading out, play some calming music or turn on cat TV (free on YouTube) to create a soothing atmosphere. These distractions can help keep your cats entertained and reduce stress.
6. Keep Calm Yourself
Cats are incredibly intuitive and can pick up on your emotions. If you’re stressed about leaving, your cats will feel that stress too. Stay calm and collected during your departure to reassure them that everything is okay.
5 Additional Tips for Traveling Cat Parents
- Prepare Extra Supplies
Stock up on food, litter, and other essentials before you leave. Ensure your sitter has access to everything they’ll need. - Create a Safe Space
Set up a cozy area with your cats’ favorite bed, toys, and scratching posts. If your sitter will be moving around your house, having a dedicated safe space can give your cats some extra security. - Monitor the Temperature
Set your thermostat to keep the house comfortable for your cats, especially in extreme weather. - Check In Regularly
Request updates from your sitter with photos or videos to see how your cats are doing while you’re away. - Ease Back Into Routine
When you return, reintroduce their usual schedule gradually. Spend extra time cuddling and playing with your cats to reconnect and reassure them.
Don’t Beat Yourself Up: It’s Okay to Travel
Remember, taking care of yourself is just as important as taking care of your cats. You’re not a monster for needing a vacation or traveling for work. By following these tips, you can leave your cats knowing they’re well cared for—and you can enjoy your travels guilt-free.
So pack your bags, follow these steps, and have peace of mind knowing your kitties are safe and sound.
